When preparing for a race or training to be competitive, even with oneself, running watches that help to track and record a runner's data are imperative. Mileage, location, heart rate and pace are all pertinent elements that are easily known with these devices. This can be extremely useful information to know what areas should be focused on. Many even have the capability of being plugged into a computer so that the person can compare and analyze the information over an elapsed period of time.

Watches, on the other hand, are easy to transport and do not restrict the person in the same manner. There are numerous versions available at all different price levels. Most also have other features that the runner can add on as time progresses by purchasing additional items. For example, a heart rate monitor that can be strapped to the chest and reviewed throughout the workout.

Watches enable the individual to constantly monitor how the workout is progressing and whether any changes need to be made. By simply turning the wrist over, the person can gauge their pace or how far they have gone. The other mechanisms cannot be viewed until the workout is over, require a lot of button pushing, or interrupt streaming music.

The information recorded on the watch can usually be transmitted to a person's computer through an USB drive. Post-run the person is then able to compare the data with that of previous training exercises to see how they are moving forward. This is very important when getting ready for a race, especially one of any lengthy distance. The athlete is limited to how many more miles that can tack on each week without increasing the risk for injury too much.

The necessity of running watches should not be dependent on price for a race trainee. They are a great way to ensure that the person is getting the most potential out of their workout as possible. All of the different versions and brands make the availability of different prices accessible.
